House Florent of Brightwater Keep is a noble house from Brightwater Keep in the Reach, one of the main houses sworn to House Tyrell. Their sigil is a red-gold fox's head encircled by lapis lazuli flowers (Ermine, a fox gules within an annulet of flowers azure). Alesander Florent is the current head of House Florent, and rules from Brightwater Keep. Members of the House are known for their prominent ears.
According to legend, the Florents, the Balls, and the Peakes descend from the three husbands of Florys the Fox. Specifically, the Florents descend from Flement Brightwater, Florys' first husband, who built Brightwater Keep as a wedding gift to his darling wife.
The Florents, like the Tyrells, claim descent from the extinct House Gardener, the defunct Kings of the Reach. The Florents have a superior line of descent, and believe that they by rights should possess Highgarden.
Florents have been involved in nearly every major event involving the Reach in some way. When Mern IX Gardener fought Aegon the Conqueror at the Field of Fire, the Florents fought at the side of the King of the Reach: Lord Jarmen Florent perished in the same burst of Dragonfire that took his King. When the Greens and Blacks fought their bloody Dance, and House Tyrell remained neutral, Lord Patrek Florent sided with his Hightower kinsmen and fought loyally for the Greens until his forces were decimated at the Second Battle of Tumbleton. He then met his own end alongside the armies of Borros Baratheon at the Battle of the Kingsroad, as the last Green forces were shattered by the Lads. When Lord Lyonel Tyrell marched his Reachmen into Dorne to unite all of Westeros as one, Lord Symond Florent marched with him all the way to Sunspear. And when Lyonel Tyrell was assassinated, Symond and his forces were slaughtered by Dornishmen as they marched on Sunspear to recover the corpse of their Overlord.
Recent History Edit
Looking over the history of his ancestors, Lord Alesander Florent wisely chose to remain neutral when news reached him of the start of the Blackwater Rebellion. Though the Tyrells openly backed the rebel Aegon Targaryen, House Florent did not march out to join their Overlord's host, instead pursuing a neutral path. But when Ironborn reavers began to raid the Reach in the name of Daeron Targaryen, Lord Florent could no longer remain neutral. The Armies of House Florent, their bannermen, House Ball, House Beesbury and House Cuy met the Ironborn in battle at Bandallon, as the Redwyne fleet fought them at sea. The Ironborn were no match for the Reachmen, and Lord Florent claimed a victory for the Blacks that pushed the Islanders out of the mainland Reach for good. Buoyed by this success, and wary that he had now effectively chosen to side with Aegon, Lord Alesander hurriedly marched north and joined his forces with those of 'the Pretender' and Lord Tyrell, and subsequently was defeated at The Battle of Blackbridge, after which he bent the knee to Daeron. Lord Florent was pardoned, and returned to Brightwater Keep as the last forces of Aegon Targaryen were hunted down and destroyed.
